Rosin: The Truth About Solventless Extracts

Solventless concentrate’s momentum has slowly been creeping up in the Nevada cannabis market, and we cannot be more excited about it. Known as rosin (and not to be confused with resin, which utilizes an entirely different extraction process), is one of the cleanest forms of concentrate available - utilizing absolutely zero chemicals in its extraction process. Rosin relies only on quality starting material (flower), heat and pressure.

Extraction labs, as well as users at home, utilize some sort of heated press, placing flower in between heated pads, then squeezing those pads together, producing sticky oils. This sticky oil is the result of heated, pressed nugs oozing out fat, lipids, cannabinoids, and terpenes, ensuring rosin is a full-spectrum product. “Rosin bags” are available to place lightly crushed up buds inside, making the extraction process a bit more organized and less messy. Rosin is known to be some of the most flavorful extract on the market, maintaining the starting materials original terpene and cannabinoid profiles. You can even press rosin from other starting material, like built up kief in your grinder, trimmings, shake, or hash.

‘Live rosin’ utilizes buds that were immediately frozen after harvest, in an effort to help preserve the plants complete terpene and cannabinoid profile. Frozen and non-frozen starting material is the only difference between live and regular rosin.

Hash oil rosin is also another exquisite form of concentrate available on the market. Instead of just pressing flower, it first goes through an ice water extraction, an ancient method of extraction, washing away flower material and leaving behind a cannabinoid and terpene rich substance known as ‘hash’. The hash substance is then pressed in the same exact manner as regular rosin, just at lower temperatures, producing an oily substance. Since more unwanted plant components were washed away during the ice water extraction, hash oil rosin is often lighter in color, even more flavorful than regular rosin, and higher in potency.
