ABOUT 710

Every culture has its unique holidays and celebrations, and the cannabis community is no exception. While most people are familiar with the significance of 420, another date has gained prominence in recent years: July 10th, or 710. This day is recognized as International Dab Day and serves as a special occasion for cannabis enthusiasts to celebrate the consumption of cannabis oil products, including dabs and concentrates. What makes 710 intriguing is the clever play on numbers and the connection to the word "OIL" when flipped upside down. In this article, we delve into the origins and significance of 710, shedding light on its rise as a grassroots celebration.

The Origin of 710:

According to the popular cannabis information resource, Leafly, the origin of 710 can be traced back to a TinyChat chat room session in 2010. Rapper Taskrok, along with esteemed members of the cannabis community, participated in a virtual dabbing session. The term "710" was coined during this session, and it quickly gained traction within the cannabis community. The first documented reference to 710 was on TokeCity on July 10th, 2011, followed by an entry in Urban Dictionary and a post on Marijuana.com in subsequent years. A 2013 article in LA Weekly further added to the growing recognition of 710.

The Origins of the Numbers:

The significance of 710 lies in its visual representation. When the numbers are turned upside down and backwards, they resemble the word "OIL." This clever wordplay serves as a fun and easily recognizable symbol for the cannabis oil community. Similar to the way 420 is associated with cannabis, 710 has become synonymous with dabbing and oil-based cannabis products.

Taskrok's Role and Grassroots Growth:

Mitchell Colbert, in a 2015 interview with Leaf Online, confirmed that Taskrok was instrumental in coining the term 710. However, Taskrok emphasized the importance of 710 as a grassroots movement, discouraging any individual from claiming ownership over it. He wanted 710 to flourish naturally within the cannabis community, free from commercialization or trademarking. This approach has allowed 710 to evolve as a day of celebration and camaraderie, uniting cannabis enthusiasts worldwide.

Dispelling Rumors and Appreciating the Authenticity:

Rumors have surfaced, connecting the origins of 710 to the Grateful Dead and their association with cannabis culture. While it is true that the Grateful Dead resided at 710 Ashbury in San Francisco during the height of their popularity, there is no evidence to support claims that 710 was used to refer to hash oil within their community. Multiple sources have confirmed that the connection between 710 and the Grateful Dead is purely coincidental.

Celebrating 710:

As the popularity of cannabis concentrates continues to grow, so does the enthusiasm for 710. This annual celebration gives cannabis enthusiasts an opportunity to come together, honor the art of dabbing, and appreciate the potency and diversity of cannabis oil products. Whether it's at 7:10 PM or throughout the entire day on July 10th, individuals and communities engage in various activities, including dab sessions, educational events, product showcases, and more. Social media platforms buzz with hashtags and posts showcasing the creativity and passion of the cannabis community.

WHAT ARE Concentrates?

Cannabis concentrates are highly potent extracts derived from the cannabis plant. These concentrates are made by isolating the desired compounds, such as cannabinoids (like THC and CBD) and terpenes, from the plant material, resulting in a product with a much higher concentration of these compounds compared to traditional cannabis flower. This increased potency allows for more intense effects and efficient consumption.

There are various categories of cannabis concentrates, each with its own unique characteristics and extraction methods. Here are some of the most common types:

Hash:

Hash is one of the oldest and most traditional forms of cannabis concentrate. It is made by separating trichomes (resin glands) from the plant material and compressing them into a solid form. Hash can be consumed in various ways, including smoking, vaporizing, or adding it to edibles.

Kief:

Kief is the fine, powdery resin that collects on the trichomes of the cannabis flower. It can be collected using a grinder with a kief chamber or through other methods. Kief is often sprinkled on top of flower in joints or used to enhance the potency of edibles.

Shatter:

Shatter is a type of concentrate that has a translucent, glass-like appearance. It gets its name from its brittle texture, which can shatter like glass when handled. Shatter is produced by using solvents, such as butane or CO2, to extract cannabinoids and other desirable compounds. It is usually vaporized or dabbed using a specialized rig.

Wax:

Wax concentrates have a soft, wax-like consistency and are also extracted using solvents. The texture can range from creamy and malleable to crumbly and brittle. Wax is popular for dabbing and vaporizing due to its high potency and strong flavor profile.

Budder:

Budder has a creamy, butter-like consistency and is created by whipping the concentrate during the extraction process. This technique introduces air into the concentrate, resulting in a smooth and easy-to-handle texture. Budder is commonly dabbed or vaporized.

Crumble:

Crumble is similar to wax but has a crumbly texture that makes it easy to handle and portion. It is produced using solvents and typically contains a high concentration of cannabinoids. Crumble is popular for dabbing and vaporizing due to its potency and ease of use.

Live Resin:

Live resin is made by extracting cannabinoids and terpenes from fresh, flash-frozen cannabis flowers. This method preserves the plant's original terpene profile, resulting in a highly aromatic and flavorful concentrate. Live resin is often used for dabbing to experience the full spectrum of the plant's characteristics.

710, or International Dab Day, has emerged as a significant holiday for cannabis oil enthusiasts. The clever wordplay and grassroots origins of 710 have fostered a sense of community and celebration within the cannabis culture. As this day continues to gain recognition, it provides a platform to appreciate the art, science, and camaraderie surrounding cannabis concentrates. Whether you're a long-time aficionado or new to the world of dabbing, July 10th offers an opportunity to join the festivities and explore the exciting world of cannabis oil products. So, mark your calendars, gather your friends, and let's raise a dab tool to toast to 710, International Cannabis Oil Day!
