A Brief History of 420

April 20th, aka 420, has been shrouded in mystery for years, with various origin stories floating around among stoners. Some speculated it was related to police codes or a Bob Dylan song, but the truth was revealed by a man named Steve who contacted High Times magazine back in 1998. Steve, along with his group of friends known as 'The Waldos', claimed to be the true originators of 420.

High Times writer Steven Hager went to San Rafael, CA to investigate their claims and found ample evidence to support their story. The Waldos used to meet at a wall on the campus of San Rafael High School at 4:20pm, a time chosen because it was after school and before their extracurricular activities. They had received a treasure map from a friend, which led them to a marijuana patch, although they never found it. However, they adopted the meeting time of 4:20pm and spread the phrase among Grateful Dead forums, ultimately making it a globally recognized stoner term.

Today, 420 is celebrated worldwide, with many people sparking up at 4:20pm every day and events held on April 20th to honor cannabis. The story of The Waldos and their journey to create a stoner legacy is a testament to the power of a simple phrase coined by high school students that has become a part of cannabis culture for decades. Now, we’re launching the new wave of cannabis culture this 4/20 with the new NUWU Dispensary.
